Scottie Scheffler, the former world number one golfer, has been charged with assaulting a police officer. The incident reportedly occurred outside the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Scheffler was scheduled to compete in the PGA Championship. According to police reports, Scheffler allegedly drove past an officer as he was arriving at the scene and then proceeded to drag the officer with his car.

Scheffler was subsequently detained in handcuffs by police and booked into the Tulsa County Jail on charges of assault and battery upon a police officer. He was later released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 6, 2024.

The PGA Championship, one of golf's four major tournaments, began on Thursday, May 18. It is unclear whether Scheffler will be able to participate in the event in light of the charges against him.

Scheffler's arrest comes as a major shock to the golf world. The 26-year-old American has been one of the most dominant players in the game in recent years, having won multiple PGA Tour events, including the 2022 Masters Tournament. He rose to world number one in March 2023 and held the top spot for 24 weeks before being overtaken by Rory McIlroy in October 2023.

The PGA Tour has released a statement regarding Scheffler's arrest, stating that it is "aware of the situation" and will "cooperate fully with the authorities in their investigation."
